THREE of the club’s younger players underlined the emerging talent Heywood will have at their disposal in the new season with promising performances in the pre-season friendly defeat of Bury.
Ross Zelem, in his third season at the club but still only just turned the age of 17, top-scored with 42 after a stuttering start by the side.
Then Australian overseas amateur Hamish Paterson, who was 20 on March 30, and 18-year-old Adam Fawcett chipped in with quickfire efforts of 28 and 18 respectively to lift Heywood to 142-9 from their 40 overs.
Paterson, who only arrived in the country on Thursday after a long flight from Melbourne, also produced a threatening opening spell of 1-3 off four overs when Bury batted.
The visitors briefly threatened to chase their target down with useful contributions from Simon Belston, 29, and Mumtaz Marza, 27.
But Heywood’s attack, as skipper Bobby Cross rang the changes to give as many people as possible a bowl, gradually got on top of the situation.
Rob Slawson claimed two early scalps, Lee Grogan’s three-wicket haul wrecked the Bury middle order, then Fawcett rounded off a satisfactory day out with the last two victims as Bury subsided for 111.
