Ashford Blake’s double and a great finish from Lee Howard turned out to be all in vain as Hooley Bridge Celtic went down to a 4-3 defeat at home to Mellor in a thriller of a contest at Heywood Leisure Centre.
Tempers were sometimes frayed – referee Mark Verigotta brandishing a number of yellow cards – and the visitors certainly knew how to wind up Hooley, especially their aggressive number 6 who was involved in a number of skirmishes.
It was difficult to pinpoint the reason for so many goals – was it good attacking play or shocking defending? – but both sides were vulnerable down the flanks and had the attacking talent to take advantage.
Mellor opened the scoring before Blake showed his finishing skills from his left wing-forward position to slot two past the Mellor keeper.
But Mellor showed why they are challenging at the top of the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League Premier Division by hitting back to go in ahead at the break.
Howard finished superbly to equalise early in the second period and both sides battled hard to get the winner, going close on a number of occasions.
But with just minutes to go Mellor snatched the winner from a scramble in the home penalty area. There was still time for Hooley to push for the equaliser but time ran out with them on the attack and they were denied the share of the points they deserved.
Defeat keeps Hooley in the bottom three, while Mellor are now in second place behind leaders Spurley Hey.
