Heywood were outplayed by a Clifton side who were on top of their game from the off at Crimble on Saturday.
They won a good toss and inserted Heywood, bowling them out for just 107 with more than seven overs remaining.
And then – after being reduced to 1-3 in reply – overseas amateur Shrivastava and young opener Will Davidson played extremely well to put on 107 for the fourth wicket to take Clifton to a five-point victory.
Big inroads were made early doors to the Heywood innings, from which they were never able to recover.
They lost Bobby Cross, Liam Mason and Danny Pawson with just 14 on the board, to some fine bowling and, in Pawson’s case, a debatable lbw decision.
Once again, however, Ray Baker dug in and with pro Rob Nicol looking in good form despite the ball seaming around, they took Heywood to 58 before disaster struck when Nicol was adjudged to have edged Chapman’s first ball through to the keeper. Nicol was unhappy with the dismissal, but took the umpires decision well and trudged off disconsolately.
Baker and Latham continued to play well and the pair looked to have got the innings back on track before Baker hit a full toss straight back to Harvey Fitton. His 30, however, again showed he is a man with a sensible approach to the game and he is a welcome addition to Pawson’s side.
Latham and Wes Hunt both looked in good nick, but again, as the good work had been done, they both found ways to get out, Latham bowled by a good one from Fitton and Hunt, looking impressive, for some reason having a wild swing at the slow bowling of McCann.
The innings petered out badly after this, which was a shame as with Andy Dawson showing signs of batting with more maturity another 20 or 30 runs could have been achieved and could have made the difference. Alas, some of the shots at the other end were pretty poor.
A total of 107 never quite seemed enough, but there was plenty of early hope with the bowling of Andy and Simon Dawson, and the brilliant slip catching of Bobby Cross.
He took three sharp, low catches – two off Simon, one of Andy – to reduce the home side to 1-3.
The opening bowlers continued to bowl well, Andy bowling the fuller length while Simon used his height to good effect. But things just wouldn’t go their way, and gradually Shrivastava and Davidson got out of trouble , although it looked like Davidson had perished to a brilliant bit of fielding from Simon Dawson off his own bowling, hitting the stumps with the batsman struggling to make his ground. However, the umpire thought otherwise
The Dawsons tired, and neither Nicol nor Kate Cross could really cause much trouble to either batsman as Shrivastava, in particular, started to put away the bad ball with aplomb.
There was time for Baker to blot his copybook – he dropped a sitter from Shrivastava off the returning Andy Dawson – but it wouldn’t have made any difference at that stage and Clifton fully deserved their 5 points.
