The Cricket Committee are delighted to announce that former professional Travis Townsend and former Greenmount CC captain Andy Kerr have agreed to join the club for 2017.
Both players had left Greenmount after the 2016 season.
Townsend played at Crimble in 2012 and was part of the side that won the Wood Cup in 2013 when Heywood beat Walsden. A top order batsman and useful change bowler he also brings a great attitude and enthusiasm to training at both junior and senior level which was felt to be crucial given the number of promising young players currently at the club.

Kerr, aged 30, has played at Greenmount for ten seasons and had been involved in the Lancashire junior system as a youngster. A prolific run scorer in the Bolton League he had been captain of his club side for the past three seasons and will bring much needed experience and stability to a batting line up that had relied too heavily on a small number of players in previous seasons.

The new Cricket Chairman at Heywood, Roger Smethurst, was delighted to have secured both players:
“The 2016 season was a disappointment for many people not only in terms of the weather but ultimately in our final position in the league which resulted in our relegation from the Premier division of the GMCL.”
“Heywood CC should always be aiming to be one of the leading clubs in Lancashire and our immediate challenge is to try to return to the Premier division.”
“We have a proud record of producing young players and giving them opportunities within senior cricket but these players need to have guidance from experienced cricketers. Travis and Andy alongside skipper Chris Humphreys, Danny Pawson and Bobby Cross now represents a senior group of players that should be well placed to help us perform well on the field and to develop our younger players in a successful environment.”
“Importantly players like Dom Humphreys and Jack Morley will continue to be given significant opportunity to play a prominent role in the side and we believe that greater stability of selection in all senior teams will allow for the great work that the Junior Committee is doing to translate into continued development as youngsters move into senior cricket.”
