THE second meeting of the Junior Cricket Sub Committee was held at Heywood Cricket Club last night (Tuesday, October 4), when progress was made in several areas.
JUNIOR PLAYING KITS – it was felt that the Club’s junior sides should be kitted out properly in the style of many other teams they had played in the past season. All agreed and a discussion ensued on whether it should just be the case of new shirts, or shirts plus caps. The cost of the exercise was debated and it was decided to get quotes from three different suppliers.
FUND RAISING – Mike Jackson is proposing a sponsored walk from Headingley to Crimble next Spring. The venture would be approximately 34 miles and, with a couple of necessary pit stops along the way, take around 12 hours, possibly from 8am to 8pm.
One or two people believed that this was too much for most people, although it was also thought that a small group would be willing to undertake the full effort. It was suggested that some volunteers might want to join the walk possibly at halfway (around the Halifax area) and some at other chosen points.
Mike said he would draw up a precise walk route and possible places for people to join in, and further details will announced in due course.
COACHES, MANAGERS – a total of 11 coaches are scheduled to be on board, either full time or when available, at Tuesday junior training nights in the 2017 season.
Managers of all the junior age groups are planned to be made up of Junior Cricket Committee members and parents.
GIRLS, LADIES CRICKET – this is proving a difficult area in which to make headway, although there seems promise of progress on the girls section, probably in the Under-Nines age group.
FUTURE EVENTS – the inaugural meeting of the Greater Manchester Cricket League is at the A J Bell Stadium in Barton, Salford, on Saturday, November 19, for the juniors in the afternoon and the seniors in the evening. Anyone wishing to attend should contact Club secretary Gwen Edwards (01706-621710).
Regarding the Club’s forthcoming annual presentation night on Saturday, October 8 (6.45pm), pastie and peas will be available (to be paid for on request). It was reported that Keith Warren is hosting the event and that Mike Jackson has volunteered to take up the DJ duties.
