A MUCH more disciplined batting performance set up Heywood’s progress to the third round of the Derek Kay 1st X1 Per-fit Cup.
Heywood rattled up 231-4 from their 50 overs – a stark contrast from the previous day at Denton St Lawrence – then bowled out visitors Dukinfield for 134.
Key performers in Heywood’s total were Bobby Cross with 85 and professional Danny Pawson, who made 71. They shared a second-wicket stand of 124, after the early loss of Liam Mason, and set up the team’s acceleration towards the end of the innings.
Australian overseas amateur Jayden Borg chipped in with 24 and the ever-improving Dominic Humphreys was there at the close on 17 to help set an imposing run chase for Dukinfield.
So it proved for the visitors, who being from Division One are a flight below Heywood in the new Greater Manchester League set-up.
They made a spirited response yet lost wickets at key moments, and were always playing catch-up after losing openers Louis Riley and Kabeel Ahmed to skipper Chris Humphreys and Simon Dawson early in the piece.
Dawson then also trapped Dukinfield’s substitute professional Chris Viljoen lbw, and it was left to Jake McDougall with an impressive half-century to keep Dukinfield’s fading hopes alive.
Once he went to a neat catch by Kate Cross running in from long-off the end was nigh, and it was left to Jack Morley with three wickets and Dominic Humphreys with a couple to mop up the tail.
