Heywood entertain Bury in two friendlies this weekend with places up for grabs ahead of the new CLL season.
The firsts host Bury firsts on Saturday, then the seconds entertain Bury on Sunday in what is becoming an annual fixture. Both games start at 1pm.
It will be the first chance of the season for several players in the first team, including new overseas amateur Riley Paterson. He arrived in the UK on Tuesday and had his first net at Crimble last night.
All-rounder Matt Hood has joined the club from Irlam and he gets a chance to show what he can do, while Chris Kaye starts the season he hopes will see him break Dave Fare’s club record of 789 wickets.
There is also a chance for Simon Dawson to impress with his dangerous medium-pacers, and he also plays for the seconds the following day.
Captain Bobby Cross is looking forward to the weekend.
He said: “We always enjoy our games against Bury, we have a great relationship with them and the games are always mutually beneficial and played in the right spirit.
“Bury are a club who are also moving forward with their move to the Bolton Association and a new changing room block – we have a lot in common with them.
“Matt Hood has come from Irlam. He lives locally and has decided that it was a time for a new challenge. It was great to see him come down for CricketForce and get stuck in and we look forward to him becoming part of the club.
“We won’t take too much notice of results at this stage but it was nice to get a win under our belt at the weekend against a Lancashire side and we will look to see more of the young players perform well against Bury.”
The seconds field a team which is a mix of youth and experience, with competition for places very competitive. Last year Roger Smethurst’s side were defeated in the final of the Burton Cup and faltered late on as they challenged for the title.
