The funeral arrangements are now made following the tragic passing of Scott McHugh on Friday morning at the age of 47.
The service will be on Wednesday 19th August, 11.50am at Rochdale Crematorium followed by a reception at Heywood CC.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions only 22 people are permitted inside the Chapel but it will be relayed via speakers outside where there is ample space to safely congregate. We will communicate further information regarding arrangements at Heywood CC but we would ask for priority to be given to the close family entering the pavilion safely and for others to use the NoQ App and click and collect drinks particularly if the club is very busy.
It will be family flowers only but donations would be most welcome to help support junior cricket at Heywood CC, a cause Scott was a passionate supporter of.
Scott had been a junior player at Crimble before progressing into senior cricket which he balanced with University life after he left Bury Grammar School. A talented left hand bat, Scott played some fine innings for the 1st team at a time when the club was in difficulties and his innings away at Radcliffe and battles with Deon Kruis and Robert Kennedy will remain as fond anecdotes for his former teammates.
His time in 2nd XI cricket was probably Scott’s fondest, playing alongside great friends and helping to nurture future talent whilst enjoying the balance of good cricket and good company.
A journalist by trade, Scott moved over to Hull with work and would finish his playing days there before returning to the club with a new lease of life in his numerous voluntary roles at Heywood.
He set up the website and passionately updated it with match reports and good news stories of club life, often supplemented with wonderful photos he took himself as he developed an interest in his camera. His reporting of the NatWest CricketForce event in 2012 was remarkable, and his passion in the build up to the event helped make it the success that it became. The website was, and will remain, a source of great pride for the club.
His perceptive and often humorous match reports on the website and in the Heywood Advertiser were often the highlight of the week for players and supporters and few were spared Scott’s sharp wit over the years.
He also volunteered as a junior coach for a time and served on the committee to support the development of the club, giving back to something that he felt had given him so much.
More latterly he had moved over to the Hebden Bridge area with Diane and was involved in crown green bowls and retained his passion for cricket and real ale. Despite the geography he remained fiercely passionate about Heywood CC, the club his grandfather had also served with such distinction and where his much loved parents Steve and Anne remain part of the fabric of club life.
As well as Diane, Steve and Anne, Scott also leaves behind his sister Lynsey, her husband Greg and their daughter Lucy to whom Scott was a loving Uncle. The condolences of all of us at Heywood go to each of them.
Scott will be sadly missed by all that knew him and race trips, conversations about the merits of the England side and time on the patio will be poorer for his absence.
Had Scott described his life in one of his match reports he might have reflected that it was akin to some of his batting. There were many great moments, it was sometimes unorthodox but it was always a pleasure for teammates and friends to share in and there would be a self-deprecating smile on his face as he fell just short of 50.

I worked with Scott on the sports desk of the Hull Daily Mail for many years and it was a privilege. He was a great guy, a character and I felt an excellent journalist, We had some great times at the Mail although I have to say our sense of humour didn’t always please those above although it did please the rest. It certainly alleviated any boredom. The news of his passing certainty came as a great shock, may he Rest In Peace and all my condolences to his family. God bless old friend.

Awful news. Didn’t have the privilege of playing in the same team as Scott very often but was always good to chat and exchange views with him. Taken away much too soon.

Scott it may be true that you were a serious thinker, but crucially you never took yourself too seriously.
You were a stimulating conversationalist on any number of topics and always great company. Looking back it is with the greatest regret that I did not partake of that company as often as i could and with the deepest sadness that I will no longer be able to do so.

Very sad and untimely news. The above is a well written piece. Thanks Scoop for being apart of a group of cricketers and ultimately friends, who made the transition from youth to senior cricket such an enjoyable and memorable time in my formative years. Rest in Peace Scott!
Shocked, saddened and upset at losing someone I have known for so long.
Remember when Scott was picked for the CLL under 15 team which I was looking after, it was an away game in the Staffordshire area I think. Picked him up in the morning and took him home after the game, it was then I realised….boy that lad could talk! Good news was that he scored a 50 that day and won the game for the team.
We agreed and disagreed on many subjects, that was Scott always wanted the last word but having a big grin on his face at the same time. He loved banter and would usually win the verbal battle, especially on a cricket field.
Many stories could and no doubt will be related in the coming weeks, but in the meantime our thoughts go to Anne, Steve, Lynsey, Diane and the whole family.

Very sad news , a true man who stuck to his point of view .
Played with Scott in the second XI, a joy to listen to his endless and losing debates with Vinnie Ball , it centred on humour . Scott would not be deterred .
His quick loose leg spin in the nets , occasionally embarrassing senior players .
Politics , no problem , music even better , I still have 2 of his CDs that I borrowed .
I still play them, I will miss Scott.

Very sad news and a huge loss. Scott was one of the group of senior players in the team when I first made it into the 2nd team back in 1996. He along with the others made it an enjoyable place to be and as I’ve said countless times before the reason why many of the lads similar age to me wanted to play 1st and 2nd team cricket. Lots of fun, lots of banter and friends for life made. Scott was a lovely guy and I’ll never forget the part he played in making me enjoy being part of the club. He will be missed. Thoughts to Steve, Anne, Lynsey and family.
Such sad news, many happy and often funny memories from time spent at HCC in the company of Scoop. A man with equal talent for a sledge, debate or a short ball, and someone who I enjoyed having an intelligent conversation with, (whether in agreement or otherwise!) a rarity these days!

I remember Scott as a young journalist – we worked on different titles in the Rochdale Observer Group and played football together.
He was a smashing lad – talented, confident, funny and great company.

I played plenty of cricket with Scott over the years including a couple of 1st team seasons when we always seemed up against it but won a few regrettably lost a few more!

A great piece that captures Scott well. Like many others, I was gutted to hear the news of Scott’s passing. I thoroughly enjoyed his friendship and his company over the years, dating back to our u15 and u18 playing days. I said in response to his Crimble Memories, he was one of my favourite ever teammates and I know I will always smile when I remember him. My heart goes out to Steve, Anne, Linsey and Diane for their loss.
