New pro Travis Townsend will play an important role in the mental and technical development of Heywood Cricket Club’s youngsters.

Townsend, 26, will arrive in the UK early in April to prepapre for what promises to be an exciting year at the club.

Facilities are set for a radical shot in the arm early this year and Townsend plans to put them to good use to help Heywood become a focal point for coaching expertise.

Townsend, who has played league cricket for Northern, Usk and Ramsey CC’s in the past three years, said: ” Together with my cricket I have assisted these clubs greatly from a coaching perspective.

“I hope to add value at Heywood on and off the playing field. I will be offering one to one coaching for any of the younger players looking to develop their technique as well as their mental preparation.”

It’s an aspect that was missing last year as Andrea Agathangelou was unable to do any coaching due to his Lancashire commitments.

Townsend also told www.heywoodcc.co.uk a little bit more about himself.

He said: “After I left school, I attended the University of Cape Town where I played for the first XI and attended the national student week, hitting a 100 on debut in the tournament.

“After two very successful years playing for the University side I was selected for the Western Cape Cricket Academy.

“I was in the program for two years and was then selected in the Western Province side to take on North West in a provincial one day game.

“From then on I continued to represent my university and Western Province, making my first class debut against Griquas. I went on to play six first-class games and six list A games.

“Following some issues with the selection process, I began to focus on carving a career in the UK and in 2009, I played for Northern CC, joining them mid way through the season.

“The club were bottom of the league and with a good work ethic we fought our way out of the bottom and into mid table.

“In 2010, I scored 1213 runs for my club side in Glamorgan, Usk CC, scored 137 on debut for Glamorgan’s 2nds, and scored 71, 67 for Essex and Hampshire 2nds respectively.

“Club commitments forced me to halt trialling that season.

“In 2011, I won the league, 20/20 cup and limited overs cup with my club side, Ramsey CC. Again I scored over 1200 runs.

“I played for Somerset 2nds against Middlesex and made 123 on debut for them. However, I don’t think they were really looking for batting reinforcements at that time and unfortunately I did not trial for the rest of the season.

“This year, I hope to test myself at Heywood and hopefully assist in bringing league honours to the club.

“I’m also very keen to pursue any opportunity with a county who is looking to add to their squad.”
