Morgan Kay

A young and relatively inexperienced Heywood under-18s side showed they have a bright future ahead of them despite going down to a defeat at Littleborough last night.

Littleborough won the toss and their powerful and more experienced side looked to make the most of the perfect conditions – and a generous bit of square leg umpiring from their home official.

The home side had got off to a good start, despite an early strike from skipper Andy Dawson, but a brilliant piece of fielding from Ben Thulborn allowed keeper Scott Jones to remove the bails with the opening bat Heywood seemingly yards out.

The decision was ruled not out by square leg umpire, much to the amazement of supporters even 50 yards away, never mind the players, who did well to keep their composure.

This set the foundations for a big score for Littleborough as Heywood retired on 33. They finished on 136-6 off their 20 overs. Credit among the bowlers must go to Joe Lovell (0-19 off 5), Dom Fawcett (2-42 off 5), Sean Chapman (1-7 off 2) and young Morgan Kay (1-20 off 3).

All the Heywood lads fielded well, James Mills taking a stunning catch at mid off and George Wall and Jack Taylor giving a great account of themselves in the field in their first taste of under-18s action.

It was always going to be a tough task for Heywood, and Dawson decided, quite rightly, that the best way to go about giving his side a chance was to biff from the beginning.

He rode his luck and was eventually caught for 23 with the score on 35.

Joe Lovell was run out for 18 after a mistake by Callum Openshaw, who showed plenty of promise with the bat himself, and with runs coming from Fawcett and Thulborn, Heywood were keeping up with the run rate and required 35 off the last four overs.

It was, however, just beyond Heywood. Kay built on his promise with the ball with an excellently crafted, unbeaten 13 but Heywood finished 23 runs short on 113-6.

It was an excellent effort and it left a lot of the players wondering what might have been if that early decision had gone their way and if a few less chances had gone to the hand of the excellent Littleborough fielders.
