Heywood enjoyed their pre-season work-out at a cold and wind-blown Enfield on Sunday.
Perhaps the major beneficiaries from this comfortable win were Andy Dawson and vice captain Dale Latham.
Dawson really dented the home side’s hopes with a pacy, two-wicket opening spell, eventually finishing with 3-13 off 6.5 overs.
He was aided and abetted by Chris Kaye (3-20), Humza Naeem (2-33) and Joe Lovell (2-26) as Enfield were bowled out for just 124. The home side fielded three batsmen twice, but they were still unable to score enough runs to challenge Heywood.
The Enfield innings was also notable for Kaye and Lovell both taking a wicket with their first balls of the season!
It was a good performance in general in the field and Heywood stuck to their task in typical early-season weather, under the eye of new captain Danny Pawson.
Latham opened the batting with Wes Hunt as Heywood tried to chase down the target, and although Hunt miscued a shot he should have hit for six, Latham played very well for his 41. It was a shame he didn’t get his 50.
The wicket was slow, helping seamers and slower bowlers, but Latham played patiently, went back and forward with conviction, and looks ready to contribute much-needed runs to the top or middle order.
Ben Thulborn showed some good signs in his 19, before treading water and being run out.
It was left to Riley Paterson (15 no) – looking much more impressive with the bat in both his innings so far than last season – and Dawson (19 no) to play some aggressive shots and see Heywood home to a well-merited victory.
