By MICHAEL GROGAN (now with cracking pics from Mike Jackson): Heywood’s under-13s made it four wins out of four with a fabulous performance at home to Clifton.
The boys went into the game unbeaten but this time they were without coaches Lee Grogan and Rob Morley, but nevertheless the youngsters were still very confident.
Skipper Jack Morley won the toss and put Clifton, who were packed with district players, into bat, and his decision looked justified as Morley himself made a breakthrough within the first partnership.
From then on it was hard work but the young lads stuck to their guns and were rewarded with three more wickets from their remaining 16 overs.
At the half way stage Clifton had posted what looked to be a mammoth 272, but the Heywood boys showed the grit and determination that seems to be etched into every Heywood player at the moment, in managing not only to chase the visitors’ score down but eclipse it in magnificent style.
From ball one the opening partnership of Robert Ruskin and Jack Taylor set about laying some strong foundations upon which the rest of the team could build on.
After they had seen off a steamy four over stint from undoubtedly Clifton’s two more senior players, Lee Bagshaw and the ever-improving Luke Jackson kept the side going with good steam.
Into partnership three with Michael Bowden-Witts and Ethan Harding. Both lads quick to change strike whenever possible to make the most of the right hand/ left hand batting combination.
From their departure with the score on 247 out strode Jack Morley and Jacob Kaye and with solid batting and some generous bowling helped their side into the lead.
It was left to last week’s saviours Harrisons Kilroy and Crompton to see the team home and wrap up the victory with an emphatic score of 315.
Credit must go to Lee and Rob for producing a very strong team.
On the night there was no stand-out performer but the man-of-the-match went to Lee Bagshaw.
