REPORT – Rob Morley: Heywood’s U11′s played their 6th game of the 2013 season at home against Clifton on Sunday morning, a re-scheduled game from the previous Wednesday night due to both teams being somewhat under par due to school commitments.
Captain Ethan Harding won the toss and placed Clifton into bat.
Game on! Harding started the bowling off excellently with two wickets falling in the first of his four over spell and with Jacob Kaye whistling them in from the other end the visitors were five wickets down in the first four overs.
This amount of accurate bowling will trouble most teams in the league and with the strength and depth of a strong U11′s squad this season it was no shock to the coaching team that through the remaining 16 overs very little in the way of extras were given and also a further five wickets fell with the best of the bowling coming from Ethan and Jacob taking sven wickets between them.
Clifton finished their innings on 255 for 10.
On to the Heywood innings, a good start was required to ensure the run rate didn’t climb too high as the innings progressed.
From the first pair to the last the concentration and communication between the wickets was excellent with each pairing doing their jobs very well.
With the words and direction of preserving each wicket ringing in the young guns’ ears, it was nice to see at the end of the innings only four wickets had fell, which is a cost of 16 runs at this level. Bearing in mind that Clifton had 10 wickets fall costing their team 40 runs, that’s a lot to try and pull back!!!
Top of the batters this week was Ethan Harding, who managed to knock off an impressive 20 runs and no wicket lost, with the pick of the shots being a straight drive to the patio area for four runs, an outstanding strok. Also in the runs this week were M Witts (14) and J Kaye (7), with most of the other players contributing five or so to the total each.
At the end of the 20 overs Heywood were 262 for 4, therefore beating the undefeated Clifton side by seven runs.
This means the unde-11s currently have a record of six played, five won with one drawn due to rain.
This is a great start to 2013 for the team and it must be said that the support on Sunday morning was excellent, with club members joining the parents on the patio viewing area before most travelled over to Ormskirk for the first team cup game.
Thanks to Sam for the food and drinks again.
