Thousands of people from Heywood enjoyed what many members believe was the best Bonfire Night yet at Crimble on Sunday.
It was indeed a cracking night at Heywood CC, and it was a superb effort from all concerned to make sure it went smoothly and that visitors to the club had a great night.
Weeks of planning made sure we had more than enough wood for the bonfire, and a great effort from many members on Saturday morning saw it all moved and stacked.
There was a great effort with the food and the outside stalls, although we slightly under-estimated the thirst of people of Heywood and need to perhaps have two beer stalls next year.
The highlight of the night, however, and what makes our bonfire so good was the display of fireworks. Many visitors commented on the extent and quality of the display, stating it was far better than the council-organised event. We, of course, can’t comment on that.
But perhaps the best things about the entire night was how many people stayed down until late to enjoy the facilities and the safe environment for their children. The bar was packed and although the queues were a little long at times, Andrea and her staff did a tremendous job.
It was great to see so many new faces down at the club, enjoying a drink either indoors or outside. It’s great credit to members that they were made to feel so welcome and we can only hope that we see some of them again in summer.
I think the event emphasised what most of us know – that Heywood Cricket Club is a club and facility for the town. The money we have raised from the event will help maintain the club over the quieter winter period, but equally importantly it will be ploughed into helping young people of Heywood enjoy Crimble, enjoy playing for Heywood and enjoy representing their town at the only club that can be said to be truly representative of Heywood.

Bonfire was a major success. This has now become a very important fund raiser in the Heywood cc calender, the turn out from the Heywood public was very much appreciated, sorry if the wait at the bar was a little to long, we will address this next year with another outside facility.

To all who contributed to the event, I know it was hard work but thanks for your efforts. To Colin Cain, throwing a few twigs on the fire dosent mean that i keep you in beer all night! It has been noted.

It was good to see the bonfire so well attended on Saturday evening it just seems to keep growing every year. One thing that probably needs to be reviewed for next year is the admission price. It was interesting to hear numerous comments from people typical being “the firework display was worth a fiver of anyones money”. The admission charge of £2 & £1 has remained unchanged for a number of years and I think the club may be missing a trick or two. Norden CC charged adults £5, concessions £3 and families £15 (2 Adults+2 or more children) and Unsworth CC charged adults £4 and concessions £2 with tickets only sold in advance ie, no pay on the gate on the night. Both events sold out. Going to a ticket only event will involve advertising of the arrangement but careful wording of a press release to the Advertiser and notices (similar to the one produced by Gary Wilkinson)placed in shops, pubs, etc should suffice.
Chairman, I find it hard to believe you of all people could accuse Colin Cain of throwing a few twigs on the bonfire in return for free beer. Everyonr knows he did it for a new pair of safety gloves.
Colin’s observations are well made, and next year prices may well be reviewed. However the fact that this year our event clashed with Norden’s and the fact that we have a different local catchment population are factors that were discussed and taken into account.
Selling tickets in advance would be ideal, however our clubhouse location and winter opening hours militate against this.
I think the success of the evening, aside from the magnificent support of the club’s friends and neighbours was largely due to the ‘team effort’ – from bonfire virgins like Scoop to some of the old campaigners – in itself a tribute to all members of the club’s committee and team captains.
PS Has Colin Cain gone home and paid for some heating now the fire has gone out!
