HEYWOOD’S hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Twenty20 Cup look bleak after again surrendering a promising position to lose by just eight runs at Clifton in their final Group D match.
It leaves Heywood and Clifton on one win apiece after three games. Monton are already through following two victories, and now play Littleborough on Friday night in the final Group game.
If Boro win, they join Monton in the last eight. If Monton win, then run rate will decide who out of Clifton, Heywood and Boro take the other place.
In the game at Clifton, the home side posted a useful 126-7 from their 20 overs thanks to a trailblazing 55 not out by Joe Brown.
But Heywood looked well set to reach their target when 63-2 at the halfway stage, with skipper Danny Pawson and Bobby Cross going well.
However, once Pawson went for a fluent 28 with the total 74 the rot set in.
Shaun Burrill quickly followed lbw to Dean Morris, then Heywood suicidally lost three wickets with the total 81 – Ray Baker another lbw victim, Cross caught in the deep for 25 and Dominic Fawcett run out for a duck.
Even then, Heywood were not out of it. But two more run-outs saw them self implode, the last being Simon Dawson when a gettable nine runs were needed from the last over.
The Clifton innings was underpinned by Brown after Heywood had the home side on the ropes at 28-4 and 70-6.
Then Brown, going in at No 6 and joined by Chris Lord, turned things around with four big straight sixes, three of them coming in four balls of a Pawson over.
So Heywood, who toppled probable ante-post Group favourites Littleborough in their opening match, can reflect on similar batting collapses at Monton and Clifton costing them dear.
