England Women lost their one off test match against India despite the best efforts of Heywood and Lancashire bowler Kate Cross.
The seamer took three wickets in each innings in the match which was the first game played in the new era of professional contracts in the Women’s game. The match was played at the picturesque Wormsley ground which forms part of the Getty estate in Buckinghamshire.
England would regret losing the toss and being asked to bat on the first morning on a bowler friendly surface. India bowled with pace and accuracy although the batters contributed to their own downfall playing across the line too often to be bowled out for just 92.
Cross partnered Somerset’s Anya Shrubsole with the new ball and managed to take 3-29 from her 13.2 overs as India were dismissed for 114 giving them a small first innings lead. Nottinghamshire all rounder Jenny Gunn was the star performer with 5-19 off her 18 overs.
As the sun continued to shine and the match wore on the pitch became much flatter to bat on and England made a better effort second time around, recovering from 84-6 to post a total of 202 meaning that India would require 181 to win the game.
The second innings started badly for England with the Indian opening pair putting on 76 for the first wicket. Cross then returned to the attack to dismiss both openers LBW and could have had more wickets had a couple of sharp chances been held.
With the third day drawing to a close Cross also picked up her third wicket with an edge through to keeper Sarah Taylor leaving India on 120-4 overnight requiring a further 61 for victory.
Despite the best efforts of the England attack no further wickets fell on the final morning as India completed an excellent victory. Cross finished the innings with excellent figures of 3-42 from 25 overs and was deemed by the commentators as having been the pick of the England bowlers.
The team now move into one day mode with the three match series starting at Scarborough on Thursday with another game on Saturday at the same venue followed by the final game at Lord’s on Monday 25th August.
