Sean Burrill and Simon Dawson produced their best ever performances for Heywood seconds as they hammered Royton by 135 runs at Crimble.
Batting first, Heywood found themselves in trouble at 69-6 when Burrill strode to the crease.
He didn’t take long to get into his stride and started driving well, putting on 57 for the seventh wicket with 15-year-old Ben Thulborn before the talented youngster top-edged one to midwicket for 26.
Sam Byrne came and went before Burrill found an ally in debutant James Mills, and the pair put on a crucual 38 for the ninth wicket. Mills played well on debut, but Burrill was simply excellent and the delight on the face of everyone at Crimble (a decent crowd) on Burrill bringing up his first half century for Heywood was testament to the player’s popularity and talent.
Burrill was the last man to fall for an excellent 62, but his job was done and Heywood had posted a total of 173 all out on a troublesome wicket.
This proved to be way too much for a Royton side shorn of older players, but who will eventually be stronger for that.
Dawson and Rick Purser were way too good for the visiting batsmen. Purser, returning from a finger injury, made sure runs were impossible to come by, while Dawson bowled with his usual aggression from his short run up.
Dawson finished with the superb figures of 8-29 off 10.2, while Purser’s parsimony was evidenced in figures of 10-7-6-2.
A great performance ahead of this week’s clash with Norden, and the Burton Cup final at Walsden on Sunday.
